The Wine
Bill Calabria is one of the most colourful characters in Australian wine – a feat that takes some doing! He was a champion boxer until his mother found out about his secret sporting activities, and something of a rock star too, making up the local band with other winery lads from the Riverina region. Now he gives all his attention to the family winery. Bill took over Westend Estate three decades ago and has an awesome track record of producing superb, flavoursome wines – winning hundreds of awards and many friends along the way. “I don’t have a single contract with any grower,” explains Bill. “I base everything on trust and a handshake.” Delightful on its own, his crisp, pear scented Pinot Grigio is great with spicy seafood dishes, too.
