The Spirit
Inchgower distillery was founded in Speyside in 1871, after its owner Alexander Wilson was forced out of his uncle’s Tochineal distillery by greedy landlords. The business grew and thrived until the tricky 1930s, when the family were bought out. Ownership went to Arthur Bell in 1938, and from the 1940s onwards most of Inchgower's output has gone into blends – Bell’s, then Johnnie Walker as well – leaving a mere 1% for special single cask bottlings like this. That’s despite output doubling in the 1960s. Ageing for 15 years in casks formerly used for ageing sherry lends a rich and complex layer of tangy citrus and savoury notes to the peaty malt. Add a drop of mineral water to liberate all the whisky’s layers of flavours and savour slowly.
