Saint-Estèphe AOC

The 2009 Grand Vin from this estate scooped an unheard of 100 Parker points. The little sister, at a snip of the price, is only just behind. Beautifully elegant, it’s a “seductive, succulent effort” with “an appealing, luscious personality” (Parker).

The Wine
Château Montrose is the youngest Cru Classé estate of Saint Estèphe, having been created out of the woodlands bordering Château Calon Ségur at the start of the 19th century. It is a well situated estate, with a modest château overlooking the Gironde, and well equipped, impeccably clean cellars. This wine is made from the grapes of the château’s younger vines, which, though their fruit may lack a little of the intensity of flavour of the older vines, still offer superb quality – especially in top vintages like 2009. Fine wine expert Robert Parker awards this wine an ‘outstanding’ 91 points – an astonishing achievement for a second wine. For now serve with plain roast beef or lamb. When it is more mature it will be ideal with game.
