The Wine
Toro has been growing grapes for centuries but only in recent times has this region taken its place at the top end of the quality league. It is in the heart of Castilla y León, northwest of Madrid. Here in the past local wines were extremely alcoholic – 16% vol was not uncommon – but with an influx of younger, well trained winemakers and new technology, things have changed dramatically. Made from Tinto del Toro (aka Tempranillo), the best reds are fruitier, with more finesse and complexity. Joya del Río means Jewel of the Duero and reflects the great reputation the Marqués de Olivara winery has enjoyed since its foundation in 1970. Winemaker Mireia Altimira recommends enjoying this weighty red with grilled red meats, game or strong cheeses.
