Here’s a Shiraz that gives you all the flavour and body of a big, beefy Aussie, combined with the elegance and balance of a classic French Syrah. It’s from the de Wet family’s Arabella Estate – part award winning winery, part stud farm par excellence. The family insist the estate’s mineral rich soils give their horses stronger bones, and while we can’t claim their vines can bestow the same beneficial effects as their pasture, we can assure you that the wines they produce are pure thoroughbreds. They fielded a particularly impressive stable in 2015, when near perfect conditions allowed the family to harvest at optimum ripeness. This fruit packed, balanced Shiraz is ideal to sip solo or with butcher’s sausages, bean stews or strong cheeses.
