The Wine
Gigondas is a little village nestled high in the hills of the southern Rhône, and gives its name to one of the region’s best known reds. As Jancis Robinson MW notes, the region offers “excellent value – the best wines are remarkably similar to Châteauneuf du Pape”. La Gille is from the Perrin family, owners of Château de Beaucastel, the flagship estate of the southern Rhône that dates back to 1549. A believer in biodynamic viticulture, Marc Perrin selected the grapes from a small vineyard located mid-slope in Gigondas, just below the village itself. Here they ripen two weeks later than in Châteauneuf, adding to the finesse of this beautifully balanced red. This is a great food wine – perfect with roast beef or, most especially, with lamb.
