Unless you’re a port aficionado, the chances are you won’t have heard of the Martinez port house. Founded in 1790, it was the greatest supplier of port to the UK. Today, it only produces 3,000 cases in a declared year, making this very rare indeed.

The Wine
Vintage port is the ultimate digestif. A sweet, warming glass of the good stuff is the perfect accompaniment for the cheeseboard or a fireside chat – and we heartily recommend this little known gem, crafted in the great port year of 1987. It’s from the Martinez Winery, formerly the sister house to Cockburn’s and now part of the renowned Symington family’s repertoire. Martinez is not aligned to a particular quinta, but takes grapes from farmers producing small quantities of highest quality fruit and allows the winemaker the freedom to create a particularly warm, rich, satisfying style. Rich and beautifully balanced, this port is slowly reaching its peak. Decant gently and serve it after a special meal with a range of cheeses – blue or hard.

"Aromas of flowers, milk chocolate and earth, full-bodied, with round tannins and a long finish"
