The Wine
The rediscovery of Carmenère is an extraordinary story. It was originally a Bordeaux variety, thought to be all but extinct until tests revealed that many growers in Chile were preserving it, inadvertently, believing it was Merlot. The truth was discovered by scientists in the mid-1990s, along with the realisation of how well suited Carmenère is to Chile’s climate. The grape now makes some of Chile’s most distinctive wines. The man behind this classic Carmenère is Christian Rojas, winemaker at the Luis Felipe Edwards estate and a previous winner of the Trophy for ‘Best Carmenère’ at the Wines of Chile awards.
