The Wine
Ever since Tony Laithwaite first worked in Castillon in 1967, he’s been a champion of Côtes de Castillon. Why? Well, as recorded in Wine International, “If it weren’t for the [political] line dividing Castillon from Saint Emilion, its wines would be twice the price. The hills are the same, the soil is the same, the exposure is the same.” In 1984 Tony bought Château La Clarière and has since won over 150 awards, including Paris’ Lauréat Prix d’Excellence twice. No expense is spared on the wine – yields are kept low to promote intensity, rigorous grape sorting is carried out for quality, and finest French oak is used. From “an exceptional year” (Decanter), producing “absolutely remarkable wines” (Vinous), this is a superb, barrel aged claret.
