Founded in 1832 under Napoleon III, Armagnac Castarede is the oldest Armagnac trading house in existence, and the jewel in its crown is the 17th century Château de Maniban. This historic estate is based in Bas Armagnac, the best part of the appellation and known for the elegance and fine aromatic qualities of its brandies. The house recently received publicity from an unexpected quarter when mentioned in a novel by one of France’s most controversial writers, Michel Houellebecq! Château de Maniban VS is made from local grapes Colombard and Ugni Blanc, which are picked young so they still retain high acidity - ideal for fine spirit. Blended from cuvées aged in cask for around three years, it makes a superb glass to savour slowly on its own.
