The Wine
At its best in Piedmont, northwest Italy, the Barbera grape can produce thrilling wines of mouthfilling fruit, with an unmistakable ‘sweet and sour’ cherry tang. World famous wine writer Hugh Johnson says: “Good Barbera is plummy and astringent in just the right measure” (Wine Companion). The Bric di Bersan estate, owned by the Bersano family for many generations, lies in the hilly Monferrato region, where rocky slopes force the vines to struggle to find water, resulting in good concentration of fruit. What’s more, the vines have to put down deep roots, so grapes take on subtle mineral qualities. Crafted by the award winning winemaker Gaetane Carron, this classic Italian red is perfect with fresh pasta with truffle shavings, or with pork.
