The Wine
Jean-Marc Sauboua has been crafting award winning wines for us since 1989. In particular he makes our Château La Clarière clarets in Castillon. In 2006 he started up his own tiny bodega in Rioja (his mother is Spanish, so Spain is his second home) on the side. Since then Altos de Rioja has won over 100 Gold medals, including 29 Golds for their flagship Pigeage. Then, in 2016, with the help of friends in the business, he completed a new winery in Rioja Alavesa. It’s in Elvillar and the highest in the appellation, as are the local vineyards. In fact, JMS owns no vineyards of his own, but works closely with long-term growers to obtain superb fruit. The vines for this 2012 are 80 to 100 years old, so expect power and depth, yet elegance too.
